Opened last Friday, Paten & Co is the latest and long-awaited addition to Stamford’s bustling bar scene. Previously The Periwig, which was one of publican Michael Thurlby’s first investments, the bar has undergone a complete transformation, and playing on the history of the original Paten & Co- a wine and spirits merchant which stood on the same site at the start of the 20th century- the new bar has been given an urban, industrial makeover befitting of it’s history, with vintage pendant lights, exposed copper pipework and plenty of subway tiles.
Serving wines, spirits and craft beers, the bar also boasts an open plan kitchen delivering an new and exciting foodie experience, which includes a menu of almost 20 little dishes- with lots of vegetarian and gluten free options- that can be ordered as snacks, as sharing dishes, or as sides for one of the mains. The plates include celeriac croquettes with blue cheese fondue; baked scallops with seaweed and lime butter; beetroot gnocchi, satisfy and pear; baked bone marrow; smoked garlic mash, and apple, fennel and watercress salad.
Mains are cooked in a charcoal oven, and include the tender BBQ beef brisket from Thurlby’s farm in Tallington; pork tomahawk steak served with fennel remoulade; baked plaice with cockle and caper sauce, and lemon and rosemary charred chicken supreme, all of which come with wine or beer recommendations. Paten & co serve their own take on a roast dinner on Sundays, including the epic whole roast chicken for two to share, served with dauphinoise potatoes, tender stem broccoli, charcoal roasted veg and yorkshire puddings- can’t wait to try that!
