Mighty meaty feast at The Millstone

After a good four-mile cross-county trek from Stamford to Barnack on Friday, fuelled only by Bulletproof coffee, it would be fair to say that my sister and I had worked up quite an appetite by the time we had navigated our way through the ‘hills and holes‘- the remains of a medieval quarry and ‘one of Britain’s most important wildlife sites’. With heels rubbed sore by ill-fitting shoes, I was more than keen to stop and take a break, so we made our way to The Millstone in search of a bit of pub grub, expectations relatively low.

We were welcomed warmly in the car park by the landlady, who informed us that pub was indeed open (it wasn’t quite midday) and that the kitchen had just re-opened after a two week refurbishment- great timing on our part! We prised off our muddy walking shoes and made our way through the pub to the bar. Claiming a small table next to the log burner, we sat down with our drinks- a pint of Old Rosie cloudy cider for me and a real ale for Sis- and perused the menu. I was finding it hard to choose between the gammon with chips and battered pineapple (hello!?) and the pork belly but when Sis ordered the ribs, my mind was made up and I ordered the same- I really didn’t want to have food envy as well as comfortable-shoe envy!

Whilst the landlady took our orders to the kitchen, I tried to get a pic of my pint of Rosie with the log burner in the background, although seemingly all I managed to do was make a really nice pint of cider look like a glass of wee! At which point the landlady came back to the bar and clocked me snapping away and, explaining myself, we started talking about The Stamford Foodie. She asked us if we would write a review on Tripadvisor in the hope that we could take them from no 2 on the best places to eat around Stamford list to no 1. I thought she was jumping the gun a bit as we hadn’t so much as sniffed the food but when shortly afterwards, the food came the table and my jaw dropped a little, I realised that her confidence had not been misplaced- neither my sister or I could believe the portion size! Sure with ribs there’s a lot on the plate that you’re not actually going to eat but this really was a monstrous board of food, as you can see in the top pic, –  full rack of ribs smothered in sweet, sticky bbq sauce, fresh side salad, coleslaw, two huge homemade onion rings and then a good size portion of chunky chips served on the side! Wowzer.

And this really wasn’t a case of quantity over quality as all elements were really good- the meat was tender and fell off the bone, and I believe it was sourced locally, the sauce was deep, rich and smokey, although my only criticism would be that there was too much sauce for me so I ended up scraping some off but I’m not entirely sure you can even call that a criticism. The salad was crisp and the coleslaw tasted home-made and not gloopy like a lot of bought-in coleslaws can be and the onion rings, oh, the onion rings! They were huge and sweet, and lightly battered and perfectly crunchy and……..er, ok, maybe I’m getting a bit carried away here. I thought this was fantastic food for a lunchtime service in a quiet, village pub, especially as the only other customers coming in seemed to be pensioners ordering soup and sandwiches.

This is definitely the kind of place that needs championing and exactly what The Stamford Foodie is about – spreading the word about local businesses that are serving really good food in friendly environments. Go The Millstone! I can’t wait to go back.
